Internal Link Defined

A hyperlink that is directed to another page on the same domain, as opposed to an external link. They are commonly used to allow users to navigate a website, help spread “link juice” around the site and establish site architecture.


Internal Link Structure

Search engine spiders use links to travel through a website to find and index all of the pages. Having a good internal link structure will help highlight important pages for spiders to index and improve the site’s SEO.

Some important characteristics of a good internal linking structure are:

  1. Link to important SEO pages using relevant and various anchor texts to tell spiders more about the page.
  2. Point more links to the most important SEO pages
  3. It should not take more than 2 clicks to get to any page on the site

A recommended internal link structure is a flat structure and is used to prevent pages of the website from being hidden behind multiple pages. The image below is an example of a flat structure:
